6th Grade Language Arts
Our sixth-grade course provides guidance and practice to help students move beyond grade level in reading, writing, and critical thinking. Through integrated grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing lessons, students build the skills they need to craft their own insightful interpretations of a text and to convey their ideas clearly and elegantly in writing. Lessons are structured to guide students through increasingly sophisticated selections from a variety of fiction and non-fiction sources. Through close analysis of these pieces, students learn methods to derive grammatical rules from real-world examples of written and spoken English. Along the way, students practice emulating the authors they are reading to build their own writing skills, and work closely with their teachers and peers to learn the craft of literary analysis.
What happens in class?
Each lesson includes a different combination of the following:
- Structured analysis and discussion of class readings
- Practice with new vocabulary words and grammar topics
- Writing workshops and guided writing activities with in-person teacher feedback
Students should expect to spend 60-90 minutes on homework every week, including short reading assignments relevant to what's happening in class, vocabulary and grammar exercises they will complete through the course homepage, multi-week writing projects, and sustained reading of books they will choose from a list we provide. Students write essays, creative projects, and formal presentations, which they'll workshop in class and polish at home. While students are drafting these projects, we try to have most of the writing happen in class so students can get instant feedback from their teachers, but students will be expected to complete some writing at home.
Students will receive frequent informal feedback from their teacher during class. In addition to in-class writing activities, students will complete 1-2 long-term writing projects each trimester. Teachers will provide detailed written feedback on these projects. At the end of the year, students will choose one of these projects to revise and polish for inclusion in a portfolio.
Students will take three in-class exams, one at the end of each trimester. Exams will focus on the grammar, vocabulary, analysis, and writing skills students are learning in class.
