6th Grade Language Arts

Academic Year Language Arts

Our sixth-grade course provides guidance and practice to help students move beyond grade level in reading, writing, and critical thinking. Through integrated grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing lessons, students build the skills they need to craft their own insightful interpretations of a text and to convey their ideas clearly and elegantly in writing. In-class lessons are structured to guide students through increasingly sophisticated selections from a variety of fiction and non-fiction sources. Along the way, students practice emulating the authors they are reading to build their own writing skills, and work closely with their teachers and peers to learn the craft of literary analysis.

Reading Sources

By introducing our students to complex passages from some of the world's greatest writers, we teach students both how to understand intricately-expressed ideas as well as to convey their own insights. Below is a sample of the high-quality classic literature and primary sources from which course material is drawn:
  • Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
  • Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
  • Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
  • A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
  • Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
  • The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells
  • Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott
  • The Yearling by Marjorie Kennan Rawlings
  • Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass
  • The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper
"My children have been students of AoPS Academy for several years now. The staff is very good at identifying and encouraging high achieving students to attain their fullest potential. The instructors engage kids to solve tough math problems, and push them to think logically and come up with unique solutions, instead of following a memorized formula. I have witnessed many classes where students are given the opportunity to suggest multiple ways of approaching the same problem. This has really helped my children develop independent learning skills and a stronger foundation in mathematics. The staff truly care for each and every student’s growth. Every child gets an abundance of individual attention. Programs such as the math competition classes, MATHCOUNTS Trainer Contest, and Short Story Contest really challenge the kids to reach up to the next level. The language arts classes like Debate & Public Speaking and College Essay Writing provide a much higher quality of education for their students. Thank you so much for being such a valuable resource for my children. "
