7th Grade Language Arts

Academic Year Language Arts

Our seventh grade students begin a rigorous study of advanced words in addition to refining their knowledge of Latin and Greek stems. Students continue to hone their research, grammar, and essay-writing skills through analysis of poetry, comparison of complex subjects, evaluation of ideas, and the creation of academic theses. We use Michael Clay Thompson's language arts series to challenge our high-achieving students.

Reading Sources

By introducing our students to complex passages from some of the world's greatest writers, we teach students both how to understand intricately-expressed ideas as well as to convey their own insights. Below is a sample of the high-quality classic literature and primary sources from which course material is drawn:
  • As You Like It by William Shakespeare
  • Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe
  • Silent Spring by Rachel Carson
  • 1984 by George Orwell
  • The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare
  • Kim by Rudyard Kipling
  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  • The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane
  • Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman
  • The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain
"AoPS Academy has a superb curriculum, combined with outstanding teachers who have provided our son a fantastic foundation in mathematics. If only I could have experienced teaching like this when I was young, it would have changed my career choice. The academy is a perfect extension of school in that they challenge students to learn at a much deeper and rigorous level. They also stimulate their interest in mathematics by emphasizing analytical thought over rote memorization of formulas.

The academy truly lays a deep foundation in mathematical thinking for success in all areas involving STEM subjects. It is really exciting to be among teachers and children who love math!

The harder the problem - the more exciting it is to the students and teachers at AoPS Academy."
